Cumulative Progress Indicator: 3 -  The student will identify ethical behaviors in the home, school, and community.

 

Grade: 4

 

Sample Activities:

 

·       The behavior of sports stars and movie personalities has been called into question. Develop a system for identifying and promoting positive role models in the community

 

·       The teacher sets up a spreadsheet with three columns and seven rows.  The title for this chart is "Ethical Behaviors in the Home, School, and Community"  The columns headers are Home, School, and Community.  Down the left side are the words: Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Fairness, and Caring.  Place the follow items under the correct category and place:

 

    ·       Person reads newspaper to discover positions of various issues by the candidates.

    ·       Calling person at home saying the person will be late for dinner.

    ·       Putting trash in container while shopping

    ·       Donating money to help flood victims

    ·       Putting away clean clothes when your mothers finishes doing laundry

    ·       Behaving in class when the teacher is out of the classroom

    ·       Coming to school on time

    ·       Cleaning the sidewalk from snow

    ·       Taking turns on the swing

    ·       Working on your own report without help from parents

    ·       Your parent not honking at a driver ahead of you for taking a parking spot

    ·       Keeping the appearance of your home attractive and safe

    ·       Saying "Thank You" when someone opens a door for you.

 

    Students add additional items to the spreadsheet.

 

·       Develop a character calendar.  Members of the class work on a character trait each day.  Write a journal entry each day about what the student did to develop that trait.  Traits will be repeated over and over to reinforce them.

 

·       Discuss common life obstacles.

    ·       What stops you from getting to school?

    ·       If you're hungry and there is no food at home, what can you do?

    ·       What can you do if you want to buy something at the store, but you don't have enough money?

    ·       What do you do if you dream of playing baseball, but you can't hit the ball?
