Content Area: Technological Literacy

Index: 8.2B Grade 8 CPI 1

Standard:8.2 - Technology Education

Strand: B - Design Process and Impact Assessment

Cumulative Progress Indicator: 1 - The student will demonstrate and explain how the design process is not linear.

Grade: 8

Sample Activities:

·       Lifting a Wheelchair: Apply the design process using the design loop method. What simple machines could be used to raise a wheelchair to a 3 ft. high platform? The simple machines already in the wheelchair do not count. Which of the methods developed by the class has the least impact on location? Which would be the must comfortable for the person in a wheelchair?

·       Traffic Control: Change an intersection from two two lane roads with a four way stop, to two four lane roads intersecting with turning lanes. Decide what the traffic light signals will be in each direction and assess the impacts on the flow of traffic. The design must be safe and efficient for all motorists and pedestrians. Use drawing paper to layout the design idea. Save all sketching ideas that lead to the final idea.
