Content Area: Technological Literacy
Index: 8.2A Grade 8 CPI 1
Standard:8.2 - Technology Education
Strand: A - Nature and Impact of Technology
Cumulative Progress Indicator: 1 - The student will describe the nature of technology and the consequences of technological activity.
Grade: 8
Sample Activities:
· Earth is becoming uninhabitable.
· Current transportation systems consume natural resources and add to pollution and congestion.
· Design a dam to retain water creating a reservoir. Use a large pan that is about 16 inches long and 3 inches deep. In the pan, create a dam that will hold back water. The water area must be 2/3 of the pan. Clay is to be used for the dam. The dam must hold the water for at least 10 minutes. The team using the least amount of clay for the most amount of time wins extra credit. (RATIO) Add water slowly until 2.5 inches high, then start timer. There must be a dry area in the remaining 1/3 of the tray. When wet, the timer stops.
· The Shopping Mall Challenge. Design a "Shopping Mall" layout of stores. The types of stores, sizes, and where to located the stores, mall entrances, parking lot plan (parking layout and lighting), water drainage, delivery loading docks for trucks, mall security, and an environmental impact plan are to be included. Divide the class into design teams that must coordinate efforts for the end result.
· Teacher writes on the board three headings: 1) Old technological products and systems 2) New technological products and systems 3) Future technological products and systems
Students brainstorm items to fit under each category. Alternative method is to have students in groups and use the Internet to find examples for the categories. Artifacts could be brought in to classify the items in there three categories. Go over definitions of technology, products, and systems.
· Make a list of current technology products. Discuss what was used for each item in prior times. Examples include: cellular phone, mountain bike, computer, smooth top range, television, etc. Project ideas of what might be used in the future for each item. Give presentation on a technolgy,
· Choose an artifact like money and explore how it differs in other countries and cultures.
· Interview a grandparent or elderly person about what objects were used and how the items have changed. Students might ask about such items as hoes, shovels, sailboats, video games, writing instruments, books, business cards, cards, fishing poles, etc.
