Cumulative Progress Indicator: 1 - The student will discuss the common uses of computer applications and identify their advantages and disadvantages.

 

Grade: 4

 

Sample Activities:

 

·       Teachers are encouraged to have students use computers on a daily basis in the classroom. As students use the technology, teachers should discuss how the use of computers compares to finding information using other means, writing using pen/pencils, ways of developing charts and graphs, etc. Why do we have this type of technology? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

 

·       Students discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using word processing for stories, letters, reports, poems, posters, and cards.


Advantages might include: clear, readable, and able to manipulate.
Disadvantages might include accessibility.

 

·       Hold a discussion on use of a spreadsheet for such items as budget, comparison of data, schedules, and games (bingo, tic tac toe)

Disadvantages: accessing

 

·       Hold a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of using graphic organizers: brainstorming, compare and contrast, and outline
Advantages: study guide, clear and readable, able to manipulate, accuracy
