Sample Activities:
· Students write a letter. Teacher can decide on topic of letter that ties in with
content from a CCCS area being studied. While practicing keyboarding skills to
create the letter, keyboarding techniques need to be emphasized such as:
- Keep your eyes on your copy.
- Keep your feet flat on the floor.
- Sit up straight in your seat. Adjust your chair if necessary.
- Keep your fingers slightly curved.
- Keep your elbows in.
- Keep your hands off of the table or keyboard.
- Always return to home row after each keystroke.
- Maintain a steady rhythm as you keyboard.
- Align your body with the letter "H" on the keyboard.
- Keep your copy on the right if you are right-handed and vice versa. Note: Speed
is not emphasized. Students need to learn and practice the correct posture and
skills in the early grades. Schools may choose software programs, free websites,
etc. to use with children to help them to learn location and fingering for
learning the keyboard. Other items to emphasize in developing the letter are
opening files and folders, navigating with a mouse, using shortcuts, and saving
files. If a school has software for scanning text, students may be shown how to
use it to convert text to files that can be edited on the computer.
