·        Students can gather basic data about a nation in several ways. For example, they can use an encyclopedia or other text, or they can learn to gather data from a traditional or CD-ROM atlas. In this activity, students gather data on two nations such as the United States and Russia. Using an atlas and a worksheet (or other data collection instrument), they gather data regarding population, landforms, climate, resources, agricultural production, life expectancy, literacy, transportation, etc. After completing the research worksheet, students write an essay using the data to compare and contrast the two nations.
