Grade: 8

Sample Activities:

·    Settlements and Conflicts. The historical events addressed in these activities include the following:
·    The migration of Dutch and Puritan settlers into northern New Jersey and their subsequentsettlement there
·    The arrival of Quaker settlers in southern New Jersey
·    The epidemics that decimated the local Native-American tribes
·    The stretching of the European settlers across Indian land
·    The lives of New Jersey slaves
·    The responses of each group to their circumstances

In conjunction with the library media specialist, prepare background materials on these six topics. Provide lists of study questions and descriptors for use with the online Encyclopedia Brittanica or the Internet. After reading these materials, students engage in writing, class discussion, and/or group research. For example, student groups can report on the experience and responses of the cultures involved. They can create maps to indicate the paths traveled by each group, the changing settlements, and the locales where slaves lived and worked.
