Standard: 4.4 - Data Analysis, Probability, and Discrete Mathematics

Strand: A - Data Analysis

Cumulative Progress Indicator:1 - The student will select and use appropriate representations for sets of data, and measures of central tendency

·        Type of display most appropriate for given data

·        Box-and-whisker plot, upper quartile, lower quartile

·        Scatter plot

·        Calculators and computer used to record and process information

·        Finding the median and mean (weighted average) using frequency data.

·        Effect of additional data on measures of central tendency

Grade: 8

Sample Activities:

·        Most students in grades 7 and 8 have major physical growth activity. Students can continue to maintain the statistics related to their body that they began to collect in the fifth and sixth grades. They should continually update what the average person in the grade would look like in terms of this data.

·        In the spring, the social studies teacher and the mathematics teacher plan a unit on the school board elections. Students are broken into groups to study questions such as:

o       What percent of the registered voters can be expected to vote?

o       Will the budget pass? and

o       Who will be elected to the board of education?

Students plan their survey, how they will choose the sample, how best to gather the data, and how best to report the information to the class.
