Index: 4.2A Grade 4 CPI 3

Standard: 4.2 - Geometry and Measurement

Strand: A - Geometric Properties

Cumulative Progress Indicator: 3 -  The student will identify and describe relationships among two-dimensional shapes (congruence & lines of symmetry)

Grade: 4

Sample Activities:

·        Students make a collection of natural shapes, including a wide variety of three-dimensional shapes such as fruits and vegetables, shells, flowers, and leaves. They describe the symmetry found in these shapes.

·        Students find objects that exhibit self-similarity, i.e., that contain copies of a basic motif which is repeated at smaller sizes of the same shape. Examples of such objects are feathers, the shape of a coastline, chambered nautilus shells, and plants which branch out such as cauliflower, broccoli, Queen Anne's lace, and ferns.

·        Students look for examples of congruent figures (same size and shape) in the environment.

·        Students use scale models of cars and airplanes to study similarity. They recognize that figures that have the same shape but different sizes are similar.

Sample Assessment Questions:

·        Multiple Choice: Geometric Properties

Kidspiration Activity:

·        Use the Symbol Maker tool to demonstrate congruence and lines of symmetry of two-dimensional shapes.
