Strand: D - Writing for Forms, Audiences, & Purposes (exploring a variety of writing)

Cumulative Progress Indicator: 8 - The student will write informational reports that frame a topic, include facts and details, and draw information from several sources.

Grade: 4

Sample Activities:

·      Students use the Inquiry Chart (I-Chart) strategy described by Hoffman in Language Arts (1992) to organize notes from multiple sources in preparation for their writing.

·      In a unit on weather, the teacher provides several resources of weather information, such as USA Today, a taped weather forecast for the same day, and the Farmers Almanac. She models on a transparency how to take information from each of these sources and transfer the information to a chart. She talks through the process of synthesizing the information and creating a new weather report for that day. Then, she asks students to work in pairs to develop a weather report for another day.

·      After reading information from several different sources (both print and nonprint), students summarize or paraphrase common themes and explain how these were developed in the works they read.
