Index: 3.2 A Grade 4 CPI 6

Standard: 3.2 Reading

Strand: A - Writing as a Process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, postwriting)

Cumulative Progress Indicator: 6 -   The student will review own writing with others to understand the reader's perspective and to consider ideas for revision.

Grade: 4

Sample Activities:

·      Students take turns composing sentences for a class story. The teacher and the class ensure that the story line is maintained.

·      After reading a novel, students working in cooperative groups discuss ways to change the ending of a story. Once each group agrees to an ending, the students work together to write the new ending.

·      In groups, students read individual literature responses they have written to Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Each group’ s task is to select one response that will serve as a vehicle for discussion. Afterwards, the whole class discusses the criteria they used to make their selections. These criteria are written on chart paper by the teacher so the children can refer to the chart when they compose pieces later.

·      Children make a checklist of things they have to think about when they write, such as spelling, vocabulary, and staying on a topic. Their checklist is kept in each child’s portfolio and is also put on display in the room for easy reference.
