Cumulative Progress Indicator: 6 - The student will investigate the relationship between prenatal exposure to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, infections, and environmental hazards and the incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome, sudden infant death syndrome, low birth weight, and disabilities.

Sample Activities:

 

·        PRENATAL CARE - Divide the class into small groups. Each group researches one of the following factors that impact prenatal human development and presents a brief oral report to the class. Students should include information specific to adolescent mothers.

 

 

 

·        TAKING CARE - Invite a genetic counselor or perinatal specialist to explain fetal development and discuss environmental influences (including the impact of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs) on the developing fetus.
