Cumulative Progress Indicator:  2 - The student will explain that tobacco use contributes to lung diseases and fires.

Sample Activities:

 

·        SMOKING AND FIRE SAFETY - Invite a representative from the local fire department to speak about fire safety. Discuss the role that cigarettes, lighters, and matches play in house fires. Students create fire safety posters.

 

·        COMMUNITY AGENCIES CAN HELP - Invite a representative from a community health agency (e.g., a local hospital, the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association) to discuss the effects of tobacco use. Be sure the speaker discusses programs available to help people quit smoking. As a follow-up activity, each student writes a thank-you letter to the representative/agency outlining one fact he/she learned from the presentation.
