Index: 2.1D Grade 12 CPI 2

Standard: 2.1 - Wellness

Strand: D - Diseases and Health Conditions

Cumulative Progress Indicator: 2 -  The student will discuss the relationship between signs and symptoms of disease and the functioning of the body’s immune system.

Grade: 12

Sample Activities:

·        CANCER PREVENTION - Students research a particular kind of cancer and develop a cancer prevention pamphlet, commercial, or public service announcement (PSA). For example, students focusing on colon cancer could inform the public about the effects of the dietary guidelines on cancer prevention. Students focusing on breast cancer might develop a question and answer sheet on self breast examination. Students focusing on skin cancer could emphasize the use of sunscreen. Students publish their pamphlet or video-tape the commercial or PSA. Students can also develop announcements for the school TV or radio station to be used during Cancer Awareness Week.

Variation: Students develop a similar campaign for cardiovascular disorders, Lyme disease, or diabetes.

·        STD RISK - Divide the class into small groups. Each group researches a different sexually transmitted disease. Allow 15 minutes to develop a chart that includes the following categories:

      -        Why is the disease of concern? What are the short-term and long-term problems associated with the disease?
-       How is the disease transmitted?
-        What are its symptoms?
-        How is it treated?
-        What can be done to prevent the disease?

Reconvene the class and develop a master chart. After discussing the results, students complete a journal entry that outlines 10 ways to prevent STDs and HIV.

Variation: In small groups, students develop a graphic organizer about one STD. Groups copy and distribute their learning aid and use it to support class discussion.

·        TOBACCO USE: WHAT HAPPENS - Using anatomical models or computer images, students discuss the short and long-term effects of tobacco use on the body. (Be sure to include information on smokeless tobacco as well as cigars and cigarettes.) Based on the effects noted during the anatomical model display, students predict the effects of second hand smoke on infants and children.

Variation: Focus on the impact of other substances, such as cocaine or alcohol.

Variation: Invite a guest speaker (e.g., a pathologist, mortician) to discuss the effects of the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs on the body. The speaker should focus the presentation on the current drug of choice.
