Theatrical Interpretation: View and describe how interpretation contributes to the aesthetic value of a performance

    ·    Show the excepts from Franco Zeffirelli's (1968) Romeo and Juliet.

    ·        Students list the positive and negative aspects of the interpretation.

    ·    Show excepts from Baz Luhrmann's (1996) production of Romeo and Juliet.

    ·        Students list positive and negative aspects of the interpretation.

    ·        In small groups, share ideas about the two interpretations.  Evaluated the work.  Discuss the importance of interpretation in theatre.

    ·        In a paragraph, describe which interpretation was most appealing and why.

    ·        Give students a short scene.

    ·        Students choose how to interpret the dialogue.  Create characters, setting, movements, etc.

    ·        Present scenes.  Observe the value of interpretation.

    ·        Why is interpretation an essential element of theatre?

    ·        How does the director's interpretation effect the aesthetic perception of theatre from the perspective of the audience, the actors, and the production staff?
