Standard: 1.3 - Elements and Principles

Strand: D - Visual Art

Cumulative Progress Indicator: 2 - The student will apply the principles of design to interpret various masterworks of art.

Grade: 8

Sample Activities:

A Day at the Beach - Ask students to consider the following questions: How do the Elements of Art and Principles of Design affect your daily decisions (e.g. clothing selections, room design and/or locker embellishments?)
·        Students then assess the similarities and differences in decisions made by artists working in various media (e.g.sculpture - Constantin Brancusi, Bird in Space, photography - Ansel Adams - Bird on a Beach, painting - Salvator Dali - Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on the Beach, mixed media - Faith Ringgold - Tar Beach)
·        Students create an image and, using the same elements and principles, replicate it in a variety of media. Consider how the choice of medium affects the image.

Essential Questions:
·        In what ways does a change of medium alter the image?
·        How do artistic decisions relative to the Elements and Principles affect the way we respond to works of art?

Reflective Practice:
·        Which choice of medium is most effective for the images you create?
·        What guided your choices?
