Cumulative Progress Indicator: 1 - The student will examine the range of roles and characterizations possible in theatrical production and performance.

 

Grade: 6

 

Sample Activities:

 

Acting Without Words: Use movement to communicate and develop character.
·        Brainstorm ways to express oneself without words.
·        Students form a circle. A label is placed on each student's back (e.g. lawyer, The Thinker, a snob, Miss America, telephone repair person).
·        Students nonverbally communicate the word on the other person's back.
·        Students try to figure out what their label is through nonverbal communication.
·        Discuss the difficulties of communicating. Ask what aspects were helpful or confusing.
·        In pairs, students interact with one another in "Park Bench."
·        One character is sitting on the park bench. The other character enters. Each must reveal something about their character through physical/nonverbal communication.
·        Audience identifies the character trait.
·        Brainstorm other ways to show that trait.

 

Essential Questions:
·        What part does nonverbal action play in communication?

 

Reflective Practice:

      ·        What are the ramifications of nonverbal action upon character and performance?
