Cumulative Progress Indicator: 2 -  The student will demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of meter, rhythm, tonality, intervals, chords, and harmonic progressions.

 

Grade: 6

 

Sample Activities:

 

Introduction to Musical Analysis - Using music from various styles and cultures, students will analyze/demonstrate:
·    Melody - discuss the relationship between lyrics acid melody.
·    Form - identify various musical forms from printed music.
·    Rhythm - perform various rhythmic figures in duple, triple and compound meter.
·    Dynamics - discuss how the use of differing dynamics affects the mood of the music.
·    Timbre - compare and contrast the timbre created by the different combinations of instruments and voices in various ensembles.
·    Harmony - discuss how the combination of various intervals creates chords and how the combination of chords creates harmonic progressions. Using a simple melody, assign chords to create an accompaniment.

 

Essential Question:
·    How do particular  elements help to  represent or identify music from various cultures and styles?

 

Reflective Practice:
·    While listening to music outside of school, identify which elements are the most dominant.
