Sample Activities

Discovering Character - Portray characters of a story and describe plot.
·        Use a musical selection to warm-up the students physically. Guide students to become various characters and show emotions through movement. Suggested music: "Peter and the Wolf."
·        Define with students what a plot is and discuss the importance of interesting characters.
·        Read a fairy tale to the students.

      ·        Ask students to recall the plot of a story.
·        Prepare an outline of a character's body on the wall or floor. Have the students write adjectives inside the body shape to describe the personality of the character. You may repeat this activity for more than one of the characters.
·        Read the story while the students pantomime the action of the story. Students should incorporate aspects of description from the previous activity.

Essential Questions:
·        What makes fairy tale characters interesting and "bigger than life"?
·        How does pantomime tell a story?

Reflective Practice: Which characters from the fairy tale you most like to perform and why?
