Strand: A - Dance

 

Cumulative Progress Indicator: 1 - The student will perform planned and improvised dance sequences with and without musical accompaniment, demonstrating aspects of time, space/shape, and energy with the intent to communicate meaning.

 

Grade: 4

 

Sample Activities:

 

Dancing Like the Wind - Choose a natural phenomenon (e.g. hurricane, thundershower.) that illustrates ways of moving in nature, such as drizzling, pouring, driving, floating, drifting, falling, or curling.

    ·        Have individuals  choose a body part and explore these ways of moving.

    ·        Divide the class into groups by the body part selected, and improvise a dance.

          Essential Questions:

                ·        Describe the differences in the feeling of the movements.

                ·        Are some body parts easier to move than others?

 

Reflective Practice: What parts of the body do you use most when you dance? Which dance forms use different parts more and less?
