Managing Antisocial Behavior Initiative (MAB) - Introduction
The Newark Public Schools has created and continues to support school-based and district-wide interventions to prevent and address challenging behavior. A cadre of behaviorists - two per region - has already been comprehensively trained by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) in Managing Antisocial Behavior, which incorporates a huge array of research-based strategies to prevent and address challenging behavior.

These behaviorists are providing staff development and serving as resources for staff on these research-based strategies, as delineated below:
School-based - Every school’s I&RS Coordinator and Crisis teacher are resources that school-based staff should consult to prevent and address challenging behavior. They have been fully trained on research-based strategies to prevent and address challenging behavior, such as those listed below, which staff may want to utilize. In addition, each region's behaviorists should be available to provide staff development through a variety of venues, such as grade-level meetings, consultation, etc.
District-wide – Newark’s I &RS coordinators and crisis teachers are also supported in this initiative with monthly ½ day meetings with the region's behaviorists. The school-based administrators, I&RS coordinators, crisis teachers and/or CST case managers can also consult with these region's Behaviorists and/or be consulted as needed. The purpose of these behaviorists is to build up the capacity of school-based staff to address a child’s challenging behavior.
Relying heavily on AFT’s “Managing Antisocial Behavior” (MAB), the Newark Public Schools and the Newark Teachers Union (NTU) collaborated in developing fact-sheets and in some cases resource guides, including behavioral observation and intervention forms, in the following research-based strategies for stakeholders’ reference and/or further assistance by the behaviorists, as well as school-based I&RS coordinators and Crisis teachers:
1. Effective Classroom Management Fact Sheet

2. Strategies to Increase Pro Social Behaviors and Decrease Challenging Behaviors
