The Office of Attendance provides and issues Working Papers to residents of the City of Newark working in the state of New Jersey as stated through the Department of Wage and Hour Compliance:

 

Permitted Work Hours

 

Minors under the age of 16 are allowed to work the following hours while school is in session:

 

Minors 16 and 17 years of age are allowed to work the following hours while school is in session:

 

Minors can not work 7 consecutive days.  They must have at least one day off during the work week.

 

*Should the minor decide not to work Monday through Friday, they are allowed to work 8 hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Job Opportunities for Youth

 

The list is far from all inclusive and the opportunities listed are subject to non performance of the hazardous and dangerous activities listed in the following page.

 

At 12 years of age they may do some jobs:

Newspaper delivery over residential routes (May start at 11 years of age)

Farming in all its branches

Gardening

Nursery Work

Raising of livestock, bees, fur-bearing animals or poultry

Forestry

Theatrical productions (No minimum age limit)

 

At 14 years of age they may do many jobs:

Clerical and office jobs in industrial wholesale, retail, service, and professional establishments

Hotel jobs

Sales persons

Solicitors

Collectors

Distributors

Demonstrators

Delivery jobs other than with a motor vehicle

Newspaper and magazine delivery over non/residential routes

Restaurant jobs

Mercantile store jobs

Supermarket and food store jobs

Amusement industry jobs

Standard office type machine operators

Standard domestic type machine operators

Hospital and health agency jobs

Library attendants

Professional assistants

Counselors at camps, beach attendants, lifeguards, caddies, pinsetters

Singers, models, entertainers, dancers, and theatrical work

Plus all the jobs listed for 12 year olds and many more

 

At 16 years of age they may do most jobs:

*Factory machine operators

  Power lawn mower operators

*Power tool operators

Tractor operators

*Machinery operators

Mechanic jobs

Plus all the jobs listed for 12 and 14 olds and most other jobs

 

*Except those specifically prohibited

 

At 18 years of age they may do all jobs

 

Prohibited Occupations

 

Work accident rate incidence is twice the average for workers under 18.  Like so many other things, the observance of a few simple rules is not overly difficult, and may help to avoid problems at some future date.  The list below, which pertains only to workers less than 18 years of age, contains nothing particularly startling since most of the activities prohibited are extremely hazardous even for adults.

 

Prohibited Products

  1. Paints, colors, white and red lead (Manufacture and packing only)
  2. Dangerous or poisonous acids and dyes
  3. Injurious quantities of toxic or noxious dust, gases, vapors, or fumes
  4. Benzol or any benzol compound which is volatile or which can penetrate the skin
  5. Explosives (Manufacture, or transportation or use only)
  6. Toxic and hazardous substances
  7. Radioactive substances and ionizing radiation
  8. Carcinogenic substances
  9. Corrosive materials
  10. Highly inflammable substances
  11. Pesticides

 

Prohibited Machines

  1. Power-driven woodworking machinery, (Supervised bona-fide apprentices may do this work)
  2. Grinding, abrasive, polishing, or buffing machine
  3. Punch presses and stamping machines with over ¼ inch clearance
  4. Guillotine action cutting machines
  5. Corrugating, crimping, or embossing machines
  6. Paper lace machines
  7. Dough brakes or mixing machines in bakeries or cracker machinery
  8. Calendar rolls or mixing rolls in rubber manufacturing
  9. Centrifugal extractors or mangles in laundries or dry cleaning establishments
  10. Operation or repair of elevators or other hoisting apparatus (They may operate the push button type)
  11. Corn pickers, power-driven hay balers, or power field choppers
  12. Compactors
  13. Circular saws, band saws, guillotine shears
  14. Minors under 16 may use standard domestic type machines or appliances, standard office machines, standard types of poultry feeders, egg graders, egg washers, egg coolers and milking machines but may not use other power-driven machinery such as power tools, power lawn mowers, power woodworking and metal working tools and power-driven meat slicing and meat grinding machines, or conveyors

 

Prohibited Establishments

  1. Ore reduction works, smelters, hot rolling mill, furnaces, foundries, forging shops or any other place in which the heating, melting, or heat treatment of metals is carried on
  2. Mines and quarries
  3. Establishments where alcoholic liquors are distilled, rectified, compounded, brewed, manufactured, bottled or sold for consumption on the premises*
  4. Pool and billiard rooms
  5. Junk and scrap metal yards
  6. Disorderly houses

Prohibited Activities

  1. Oiling, wiping, or cleaning machinery in motion or assisting therein
  2. Steam boilers carrying a pressure in excess of 15 pounds
  3. Construction work
  4. Fabrication or assembly of ships
  5. Transportation of payrolls off the employer’s premises
  6. Demolition of buildings, ships or heavy machinery
  7. Indecent or immoral exposure
  8. Most occupations in slaughtering, meat packing, processing, or rendering

PLEASE NOTE: There must be a complete address with city and state.

The Minor’s Title should be Specific – (Cashier, Sales Associate, Cook, etc...)

We can not accept titles such as (Crew Member, Team Member, Operator, etc.). It must be SPECIFIC.

The hours should be filled out in NUMBERS. The Employer may put the amount of hours the minor will work or the Employer can fill in the hours by Start and End Time. We can not accept a check (􀀳) or (X) next to the Days the minor will work.

The Wage should also be filled in.
