Meet the NTU

The Newark Teachers Union is New Jersey’s largest AFT local Teachers’ Union. Nearly 5,400 Teachers, Aides and Clerks provide professional instruction and non-instructional services for Newark’s children every day. The day to day operations of the NTU are handled by Jospeh DelGrosso, President and John Abeigon, Director of Operations who are supported by NTU full and part-time staff. NTU reaches into every elementary, middle, secondary and special schools via its Building Reps, a vital link between the Union and its members.   

NTU headquarters is located in downtown Newark across from historic Symphony Hall. The NTU is easily accessible from all Newark schools and is conveniently located to Liberty International Airport, Penn Station, Garden State Parkway and the NJ Turnpike. There is ample parking adjacent to the NTU building for members and visitors as well as in the rear of NTU headquarters.

The first floor of NTU headquarters serves as the main hall for meetings for Building Reps, Executive Board members, community groups and Professional This meeting area also serves as the Media/Conference center for Professional Development workshops for teachers and paraprofessionals, access to the Internet, and phone conferencing. The NTU-AFT Labor History display as well as NTU Hall of Fame recipients and NTU web site awards are housed on the first floor.

On the second floor, you will find the Secretary-Treasurer, Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer’s offices and the Research and Communication, Technology and Special Projects and Retiree departments. The mailing and reproduction center are also located on the second floor.

The President and Director of Organization’s offices as well as legal counsel, COPE Chairperson and President’s secretary are located on the third floor.

The fourth floor is dedicated to supporting NTU members’ professional needs through the Educational Resource Center, Computer Lab with access to the Internet, color printer and classroom supplies and equipment. Professional Development workshops are held regularly through the school year. The fourth floor is also home to the NTU Education Foundation and ER&D departments.
