Starting in 2008, the LAL speculative writing will not include the traditional “picture prompt.” However, we have included scored samples from previous assessments which do include picture prompts to demonstrate how to use the scoring rubrics to properly score writing samples.

Students may respond to a task that is presented through the use of a brief passage that students will read.  The given passage will provide students with information that may be used as a springboard for students to write a story, actual or fictional.  Students will use the information from the passage to make decisions, solve problems, and create original works.

In 2009,  the NJDOE will be field testing Speculative Writing Prompts for 6th to 8th grade, and these may be added to the assessments in future years.
