The Newark Teachers Union and the Newark Public Schools collaborated on developing the Standards Clarification Search Engine. This new resource integrates New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) resources from the Standards Clarification Project, new NJDOE third through eighth grade assessments and the previously developed CCCS CD ROM. It should help stakeholders better align their professional practices with state standards and assessments.

Special Edition - Charter Schools.
A comprehensive and revealing analysis of Charter Schools and Newark Politics. NTU’s Research and Communication Department scrutinizes commonly held perceptions about the benefits of Charter Schools but the data points to discriminatory enrollment procedures, exorbitant administrative expenses, little State oversight, questionable achievement results and costly, segregated placement of special education students. This document, prepared by the Newark Teachers Union, analyzes and reports out New Jersey’s Department of Education (NJDOE) data that points to significant problems in New Jersey’s charter schools, which need to be addressed legislatively and with NJDOE regulatory oversight.

Resources & Strategies to Improve the Effectiveness of Newark's PRC/504 Teams

Newark's PRC/504 teams must provide a significant number of services to their respective schools. Changing legal mandates guide PRC/504 teams in their respective responsibilities. Stakeholders see the main role of the PRC/504 team as receiving and addressing "requests for assistance" (RFA) from staff, parents and students. For example, three common problems, which students experience and PRC/504 teams assist staff (e.g., teachers and administrators) and parents in addressing are academic problems, cognitive difficulties and/or challenging behavior. This electronic resource fully integrates New Jersey's Core Curriculum Content Standards (CCCS), corresponding framework activities and vignettes, as well as research-based teaching and learning activities to address RFAs. This electronic resource can also assist individual teachers, administrators and parents in addressing academic, cognitive and behavioral problems. PRC/504 Coordinators also have a number of other responsibilities, which must be addressed and subsequently evaluated.

This electronic resource was developed collaboratively by the Newark Public Schools and the Newark Teachers Union (NTU) to assist PRC/504 teams in this endeavor.

Newark School Data

Newark School Data: The New Jersey Board of Education collects a vast amount of information. In order to make this information more user-friendly, the Newark Teachers Union has compiled this data from the school report cards, No Child Left Behind Report Cards, and Comparative Spending Guide. Below you will find disaggregated test scores, school-based budgets, school report card data, and No Child Left Behind data for each school. In addition, for schools that have gone through the CAPA process, we have included the school's CAPA recommendations.

Special Education Teaching Modules

Special Education Teaching Modules: The Newark Public Schools, the Newark Teachers Union (NTU), and the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN) recognize the need for ongoing and embedded staff development to improve teaching and learning and the performance of students with disabilities. To facilitate this process, we collaborated on developing these professional development modules that target major components of special education processes, which address identified district needs. In this endeavor, we fully integrated the state's standards and corresponding framework activities and assessments.

This resource can be utilized by individual staff members and/or school-based activities. Clicking on the buttons on this page will take you to the corresponding teaching modules.
