Sample Activities:

 

Multicultural Fingerprints - Using music from various styles and cultures, students will discuss/identify:

·       Melody - students follow the melodic direction of a printed piece of music while listening to the piece.
·       Form/ Rhythm - Using cards containing the rhythms of each phrase of a song, students will arrange the cards in the proper order of the song to discover the form of the piece.
·       Dynamics - while listening to a piece of music, students will identify subtle changes in dynamics.
·       Timbre - compare and contrast the qualities associated with each family of instruments.
·       Harmony - compare melody alone with melody/ harmony by singing rounds, melody/descant, partner songs, and melody/ostinato.

 

Essential Question:
·       How can the use of the elements make a piece of music more/less interesting?

 

Reflective Practice:
·       What would happen if you eliminated one of the elements from a piece of music?
