Strand: A - Dance

 

Cumulative Progress Indicator: 4 - The student will analyze the interrelationship between dance movement and the movements of everyday life and effectively demonstrate the difference between pantomiming and abstracting a gesture.

 

Grade: 6

 

Sample Activities:

 

Abstracted Gesture - Select a gesture and/or facial expression that an emotion. Develop the expression into movement.
·        Organize movement into 8 count phrases.

      ·        Video the original gesture or expression. Discuss similarities, and differences between the gesture and the movements.
·        While the video is playing do the same 8 count phrase with a rhythmic variation.
·        Discuss if rhythmic variations change the meaning of the dance.

 

Essential Questions:
·        Why do dancers often put movement into 8 count phrases?
·        What does the video do the dance?

 

Reflective Practice:
·        Do particular rhythms prescribe certain moods or emotions?
