Serial Music - Students will create and perform an original tone row composition:

·     Students will create their own tone row - a series of sounds in which no sound can be repeated until all other sounds have been played in order.
·     Students can use any sounds -traditional notes, non-traditional sounds, vocal sounds, electronic sounds, etc. not to exceed 12 consecutive sounds.
·     The sounds must be played in order with no sound being repeated until all other sounds are played. Individual sounds can be repeated before moving to the next sound.
·     New notation may be created to represent each sound.
·     Each tone row can be played in its original form (Melody), in Retrograde (backwards), Inversion and in Retrograde Inversion.
·     The elements of music can be applied to create different versions of each tone row - Harmony can be created by placing one row over the other. Various Rhythms can be applied to each row. Each row can contain different Meters. The different sounds in the rows will create different Timbres.

Essential Question:
·     How is the creative process affected by the use of a formula?

Reflective Practice:
·     Did you feel restricted or limited in your creative process?
