Cumulative Progress Indicator: 1 - The student will clap, sing or play from simple notation that includes pitch, rhythm, dynamics and tempo.

 

Grade: 2

 

Sample Activities:

 

The Music in Poetry - Select a four line poem, written or projected on the board.
·        Read the poem with the class.
·        Using simple notation, assign rhythmic value to each word.
·        Clap and count the rhythm.
·        Using DO, MI SOL and LA, assign pitches to each rhythm and have students sing the melody.
·        Sing the song.

      ·        Have students improvise an ostinato to accompany the song.

 

Essential Questions:
·        How do everyday words or names have rhythm?
·        How do lyrics influence the shape of the melodic line?

 

Reflective Practice:
·        Spend one day listening to how everyday speech can sound like a song.
