Educational Issues Department/Professional Development

A graduate of Barringer High School, Michele chose to return to BHS after college in 1971 and was able to teach her entire career at BHS before retiring in June,2010.

Upon becoming a V.P./Executive Board Member for the NTU in 1995, she co-founded the following professional development initiatives:

Grand opening of the NTU Educational Resource Center on the 4th flr for all local 481 members

Annual spring Educational Conference

After being trained at the AFT in Washington, DC, she was appointed Local Site Coordinator at the NTU for the Educational Research and Dissemination program and presented after school workshops in-house.

She originated the Albert Shanker Scholarship Fund in 1999 which has distributed, over the years, more than 300 hundred scholarships to the children of Local 481 members.

Coming soon:

  • Beginning of the year classroom management workshops for new teachers (September-October 2009)

    Take place at NTU headquarters, 1019 Broad St, multimedia room 1st floor
     
  • After school workshops (October 2009)

    Take place at NTU headquarters, 1019 Broad St, multimedia room 1st floor, 4th floor ERC room and computer lab.
     
  • NTU-NPS Annual Education Conference (Spring 2010)

    Takes place at the new First Avenue school all day Saturday.
     
  • Bulletin board contest

    Takes place 4th floor ERC room and is ongoing throughout the year.

     
  • NTU Hall-of-Fame Dinner and Albert Shanker Scholarship Awards (May 2010)

    Takes place at Mayfair Farms in the Spring where we honor Newark’s best students and former NTU members who have significantly contributed to the union’s history.

Although you may stop in on any day, we will have teachers with specific grade level expertise on:

Monday: Pre-K through 4th grade

Tuesday: 5th through 8th grade

Wednesday: High School

Thursday: Special Needs
